SUPER CRICKETS vs. LC

The Sequoyah Conference, back in the day, would play a 5th Quarter at the conclusion of the regularly scheduled normal four quarter game. This extra quarter of play would not count in league standings, but would give an opportunity for the younger players to get additional playing time and hone their skills. The 5th Quarter also helps alleviate the problem of having 50 some odd players and trying to get them all playing time. Due to time constraints, the 5th Quarter was abandoned after a couple of seasons.

Fast forward five or six years and the problem still exists, a bunch of kids loosing interest in football and parents upset over playing time. At the latest Sequoyah Conference meeting, President David Matlock introduced the model to re-establish the 5th Quarter games in the Cricket division; after some discussion and a consensus on the rules, the Commissioners voted to start playing “Super Crickets” football. The “Super Crickets” will be 5 and 6 year old Crickets who are already on their perspective rosters. The “Super Crickets” will play before the Crickets game, starting about 2:00 pm, the game will consist of four eight minute quarters without stopping the clock. Coaches or parents will substitute as referees.

Our Loudon Super Crickets have already played two games, winning 6-0 at Tellico and loosing to LCYFO 22-12. On Saturday August 27th, our opponent the Vonore Blue Devils did not have enough younger players to field a Super Crickets team. So our neighbors across the river had an open date and were more than willing to bring their Super Cricket team to Loudon to play.

LC started on offense and on the second play #14 Caleb Easter raced 58 yards for a touchdown. #2 Hayden Bingham added the conversion points. Loudon answered with a nifty run by #47 Jonathan Hawkins for six points. With the failed extra point attempt, the Panthers were up 8-6. LC went to work with #33 Bryant Bingham and #25 Chris Merril as the workhorses. Merril scampered in from 25 yards out for another Panther score. #3 Parker Simpson vaulted in from the three yard line to add two points. Loudon was having trouble holding on to the football, and fumbled it back to LC. The Panthers rushed #82 Austin Flashbart with #3 Simpson getting the nod at the goal line. Now the Red Clad Super Crickets were on the move, #31 Ryan Barr out ran everyone in route to a 48 yard touchdown! #41 Nate Rohen and #32 Dylan “Cucumber” Russell played well on both sides of the ball. #34 Marcus Howard looked good running the ball. #91 Jacob Settle and #58 Cassie Webb logged several tackles.

The Mascot cheerleading team cheers during the Super Crickets game, come to the games early and watch these young athletes.

Now this was fun! Burt Settle has agreed to take pictures, what is needed now is for a Super Cricket parent to step up and take stats and write articles.
