Out for the coin toss were Mustang Captains #17 Chase Bowen, #44 Caleb Holt, #47 Payne Bennett, #64 Alex “The King Pin” Silvey (of the Silvey Mafia), and #80 Zachary Brown. The Mustangs won the coin toss and deferred until the second half. The Mustangs have lost four straight. In fact it appeared the players had given up on the season after their 30 game winning streak was broken. The Coaches juggled personnel around to shake things up; practice took on a new sense of urgency. To stave off elimination, the Mustangs had to win. With their destiny in their own hands, the ‘Stangs take the field. #48 Caleb Russell kicked off for the Red Team. Madisonville started on their own 50 yard line. The first quarter came and went scoreless as neither team could gain an advantage. The Mustangs put together an eight play drive that spanned the first and second periods. The big play was a 32 yard pass completion from half back #30 Trey Townson to #27 Taylor “Skillet” Watson. Continuing the drive down to the three yard line, Townson vaults into the end zone with the clock showing 7:34 left in the second half. “Skillet” Watson would stop the Tornados with an interception on their next possession. Watson returned the pick 18 yards, up to the 46 yard line. The Loudon offense ran 10 plays and lots of clock before stalling out on downs. Madisonville had too little time and too much green as they ran out of steam as the first half expired. The score at the intermission was 6-0, Loudon Mustangs. First Loudon and then Madisonville failed to sustain any offensive momentum. #81 Josh “The Wall” Taylor recovered a fumble allowing the Mustangs to finally stage a rally with an eight play drive. Scoring on the first play of the fourth stanza, Townson banged into the end zone from 16 yards out. Back on defense, Townson and #21 Trey Horton combine for a sack that pinned Madisonville for a 10 yard loss. Loudon takes over on downs on the Mad 40 yard line. With the help of a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Mustangs march down to the seven yard line. #36 Jake Mourfield goes in virtually untouched to put the ‘Stangs ahead 20-0 with 2:20 left in the game. The Tornados managed a late score, but with the victory, the Mustangs advance to post season play! Offensively #30 Trey Townson was back on track, regaining his early season form by rushing for 86 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. The outstanding defenders were #36 Jake “The Monster Man” Mourfield taking down five ball carriers and #55 Jonathan “Cheese Curl” Dorsett, #9 Sam Eldridge, and #21 Trey Horton who each contributed four knock downs. Total offense was 163 yards. Rushing accounted for 123 yards on 32 attempts, passing added 40 yards on three completions. In a return to Mustang football, the ‘Stangs (5-4) earn a playoff berth to qualify for post season play and are victorious by a score of 20-6.
