2005 Redskins vs. CAKLoudon 28 - CAK 207th Game, Week 7 October 7th, 2005Photos by Jammie Graves - Article by Jeff McQueen 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final Loudon Redskins 6 16 6 0 28 CAK Warriors 7 7 6 0 20 The Redskins (5-1, 2-2A) traveled to west Knoxville to participate in a battle of wills verses the Christian Academy of Knoxville (CAK) Warriors (4-2, 2-2A). This regional game will be the first meeting between these two schools, but the winner of this game has a good mathematical chance to earn the #2 regional seed and have home field advantage in the playoffs. To say a lot is at stake is an under statement. Would playing in a steady drizzle on a wet and sloppy field hurt the CAK passing attack or augment the Redskins power/finesse running game? Let’s get started and see. Out for the coin toss were Captains #3 Brandon Dixon, #4 Cody Fritts, #7 Mark Harrison, and #51 Clay Matlock. CAK won the toss and deferred until the second half. The opening kick-off carried into the end zone, for a touchback. First and 10 Big Red on the 20 yard line. The first play was an end around pass from #10 Ryan Queen to #21 Cory Fritts that was good for a 24 yard gain. QB #4 Cory Fritts connected to #81 Daniel Laughlin for 15 yards. Then #24 Josh Hawkins rushed three times for 25 yards. The ‘Skins found themselves on the Warriors 13 yard line, it’s now third and seven. Hawkins attempts the half back pass, but it is intercepted in the end zone. In a major lapse of judgment the defensive back, #4 Mitchell Moran, ran the ball out of the end zone instead of taking a knee. Big mistake, Moran was knocked down on the seven yard line. The CAK Warriors led by south paw quarterback, #3 Richard Harb, probably have the best passing attack in the State of Tennessee! Would the Redskin defensive backs be up to the challenge? Harb completed two passes for six yards and then threw incomplete. With CAK punting from the 13 yard line, Loudon should gain excellent field position – they did. #21 Cory Fritts fielded the punt on the 45 yard line, and with a 19 yard return put the Reds in business on the Warrior 26 yard line. Earning two first downs in the seven play drive, the Fritts to Fritts connection was good for 11 yards and the first score of the game. The extra point kick was blocked. CAK got the ball back with 5:27 left in the first quarter and after a good return of the short kick-off, set up camp on their own 37 yard line. Three passes from Harb moved the Warriors down to the Redskin three yard line. On the next play the ball is loose, after a mad scramble #2 Ben Everett comes up with the loose pig skin! The Loudon “D” thwarts that CAK scoring opportunity! The Redskins bulled off the goal line, but on third and one are punting from their own 12 yard line. The 28 yard punt with no return put the Warriors on the Redskin 40 yard line. Five plays found CAK on the two yard line. #41 Trey Bowland bangs in for the touchdown. With the extra point kick, CAK enjoys a 7-6 lead with 9 seconds left in the first period. That would be the only time CAK would be ahead in the ball game, and even that was short lived. After #8 Tyler Campbell’s 25 yard kick-off return, it was first and 10 Big Red on the 29 yard line. The Loudon Redskins stormed ahead with a 12 play drive that ate up 5:01 off of the second stanza clock. Running behind an inspired offensive line consisting of #51 Clay Matlock, #53 Jimmy McQueen, #55 Tyler Roberts, #69 Raymond Wagner, and #79 John Paul Hackney; Junior tailback Hawkins carries seven times for 55 yards. Two passes to Queen and one to #3 Brandon Dixon were mixed in with the power running. QB Cody Fritts snuck in from the one yard line for the touchdown, and also added the 2-point conversion. CAK looked sharp returning the kick-off up to the 43 yard line. Harb was three for three passing, but came up one yard short. A QB sneak gained the first down, but Harb was incomplete on three straight passes. DB’s Queen and Cory Fritts each had a pass break up to force down and distance trouble. Faced with fourth down and 10, the Warriors were in punt formation. Knifing through un-touched was Campbell, who laid out and cleanly blocked the punt! One play later the opportunistic Redskins were in the promised land! For the second time tonight, the lethal Fritts to Fritts pitch and catch was good for a 27 yard touchdown! Hawkins takes a naked pitch wide left for three yards and two points. The squib kick-off was recovered on the 25 yard line with no return. CAK had just under four minutes to go 75 yards; they would need the entire clock to do so. 13 plays, all passes but two, had the Warriors down to the Redskin 22 yard line. Harb connects with his favorite receiver, #25 Jay Smith, for the touchdown. With the kick, the half time score is 22-14 Big Red. The Achilles heel of the Redskins this year has been kick-off coverage, CAK returned a short kick 26 yards up to the 38 yard line. The Warriors are also the only team this year to score on the Redskins on the opening possession of the third quarter. Making it look easy, CAK drives down and scores on Bowland’s second touchdown of the game. The 2-point conversion fails, leaving the score 22-20 ‘Skins. Now it’s a ball game. Hawkins returns the kick-off 28 yards, but sprains his ankle in the process. J-Hawk is helped off the field, out trots a confident #8 Tyler Campbell. On third and four, Campbell refuses to go down, breaking tackles along the way to a 45 yard touchdown jaunt! The score is now 28-20, Big Red. CAK is three and out. After the punt, Loudon starts on the 24 yard line. The Redskins are playing “Keep-A-Way”, keeping the football away from the potent CAK offensive that is. Behind the strong arm of QB Cody Fritts and the running of Campbell; the ‘Skins embark on a ball control 20 play drive that burns 11:01 off the game clock. Turning the football over on downs at the 22 yard line without scoring is not the end of the world; but it’s still a one possession game where anything can happen. There’s only 7:26 left in the game. CAK gladly took over on their own 22 yard line. Bowland busts a 24 yarder. With the ball on the 46 yard line, CAK is driving to tie up the game. Next is the play of the game? Harb is back in the shot gun formation. The ‘Skins had been able to flush him out of the pocket a few times, and for the third time tonight the snap goes right through his hands. Hustling back and trying cover the ball, Harb does not have control. #81 Daniel Laughlin quickly arrives on the scene and pounces on Harb. The football quirts free and bounces further down field, and is finally recovered by #53 Jimmy McQueen on the CAK 23 yard line. The Referee signals Redskins ball and resets the chains. The CAK Head Coach calls a time out and vigorously protests the call. Mayhem ensues! The Redskin Coaches, players, and fans come unglued!!! Out comes a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct. The officials give CAK back the ball, citing an inadvertent whistle. However since the chains had been reset, the officials missed the original line of scrimmage by at least 10 yards! The fired-up Loudon defense was not going to allow the Warriors to score. After a few plays, with down and distance trouble, Harb throws incomplete on fourth down. Loudon got the ball back and resumed their “Keep-A-Way” strategy, running the remaining 4:22 off the game clock. In victory formation, QB Cody Fritts takes a knee. The final score was 28-20, Redskins (6-1). Next Friday is Homecoming as the ‘Skins host Oliver Springs. Go Big Red!
