2005 Redskins vs. RockwoodFinal Regular Season Game - October 28th, 2005Photos by Jammie Graves - Article by Jeff McQueen 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final Loudon Redskins 13 0 9 14 36 Rockwood Tigers 0 7 0 7 14 This regional contest is the final regular season game. Although the Redskins are a lock at the #2 seed for post season play, they definitely want to end the regular season on a positive note. We hold a 23-8-1 record all time verses Rockwood (4-5, 2-2A); the last meeting resulted in a 34-15 Redskin victory in 2000. With this the 82nd season of Loudon Redskin football, tonight is also the 750th game. Loudon’s overall record is 457 wins, 273 losses, and 19 ties. Out for the coin toss were Redskins Captains: #3 Brandon Dixon, #4 Cody Fritts, #7 Mark Harrison, and #51 Clay Matlock. The Redskins won the toss and wanted the football. #86 Jeremy Johnson hauled in the kick-off on the 16 yard line, and advanced the ball 13 yards. First and 10 Big Red, on the 29 yard line. Loudon executed six plays, earning a first down in the process. But soon the Reds found themselves facing 4th and six from the 48 yard line. Launching a 46 yard punt was #4 Cody Fritts that pinned the Tigers down at the six yard line. Playing good field position, the ‘Skins forced Rockwood to punt. On the return, a block in the back penalty moved the ball back to the Rockwood 43 yard line. From there, #24 Josh Hawkins bounces out wide and rambles 36 yards for another first down. Going to the air, QB Fritts connects with #3 Brandon Dixon for a 26 yard touchdown! The extra point kick sailed wide right, but Loudon draws first blood with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Rockwood embarks on an 11 play drive… and that was one play too many. On 3rd and eight, the ‘Rock QB #1 Zack Breazeale is picked off by #81 Daniel Laughlin, who pads the Redskin lead with a 53 interception return for a touchdown! This time the conversion kick by Cody Fritts is right down the middle. The kick-off is the first play of the 2nd period, which puts the Tigers back on offense on the Redskin 27 yard line. It takes an off- sides penalty for the Tigers to earn a first down, as six plays only advanced the football eight yards. After an incomplete pass, ‘Rock is punting again. A 31 yard punt with no return puts the Reds on their own 29 yard line. Loudon was three and out as QB Cody Fritts is sacked for -15 yards on third down. Punting from his own 18 yard line, Cody Fritts boomed a 48 yarder! The football hit the ground and with a good Redskin roll was downed on the Tiger 34 yard line. The Tigers had plenty of time and were on the move. With the help of a pass interference call and big runs by #22 Billy Moffitt and #44 Bryant Allen, ’Rock has it 1st and goal on the three yard line. Moffitt went over for the score, and with the extra point kick narrows the deficit to 13-7. For his second kick-off return, #86 Jeremy Johnson weaved ahead 11 yards advancing the ball up to the 30 yard line. The Big Red had just 1:16 left in the second period. Hawkins piled up 11 yards, and then QB Cody Fritts threw incomplete twice. A pitch to J-Hawk wide left, good blocking up front, and good blocking down field is an equation that resulted in a 60 yard gold rush! But wait, what’s that yellow flag laying on the ground back at the line of scrimmage? Oh No… holding! Back comes that outstanding run, off the scoreboard comes those six points, and with the step off the ball is spotted back on the 35 yard line. The ‘Skins were in punt formation on 4th and 12; the fake punt didn’t fool anyone. The Tigers take over on the Redskin 39 yard line with 20.3 seconds on the clock and no time outs. Breazeale completes a 34 yard pass to Moffitt, down to the five yard. The offense hurries to line so the quarterback can spike the ball. 2.6 seconds left, out quickly comes the field goal team. The kick is up, but sailed wide left; the Big Red dodges the bullet that time. At the intermission, Loudon clings to their 13-7 lead. The Big Red Wall was up to the challenge and forced Rockwood to punt on their first possession of the second half. The Loudon offense pounded the Rock! Seven running plays, with a pass completion to Dixon good for 13 yards mixed in for good measure. On 4th and goal from the two yard, Josh Hawkins has his second touchdown of the game called back by a holding penalty? With the football now spotted on the 11 yard line, the Redskins line up for a 29 yard field goal attempt (the ’Skins have struggled with place kicking this season). Long snapper #55 Tyler Roberts, holder #87 Wiley Brakebill, and kicker Cody Fritts are perfect. With the Tiger offense in a tail spin, of course the Red “D” had a lot to do with that, Rockwood was three and out on consecutive possessions. However an exceptional punt of 58 yards with no return, pins the ‘Skins deep in their own territory on the 10 yard line. The clock showed 4:12 remaining in the third quarter. Mr. Joshua Hawkins blasts ahead for 28 yards. That was it, the milestone run; Hawkins had just broken 1000 yards rushing on the season! Although the Loudon Band was playing, no confetti fell from the sky, the referee didn’t stop play to award Josh the game ball, and the home crowd definitely didn’t all stand and cheer. But what did happen was that 11 Red clad warriors got back in the huddle to continue taking care of the business at hand. Hawkins would later say with the victory on the score board that, “1000 yards is the gold standard for running backs, I would not have been able to attain that lofty plateau without my teammates, especially the offensive line”. On the next play, a 14 yard pass completion to Dixon, a Rockwood player was injured. Dixon got lower than the Tiger players, who were hustling, full speed to make the tackle; they ended up hitting each other head on, helmet to helmet. #58 Barrett Owings lay motionless on the field of play. Not taking any chances with a potential neck or head injury, an ambulance was summoned. Play was stopped for about 45 minutes. A post on CoachT.com stated that Owings was not seriously injured. When play resumed, the Redskins ended up punting from the Tiger 48 yard line; this was only the third Redskin punt of the game. Fielded on the 11 yard line, the punt was fumbled after a big hit. #8 Tyler Campbell scooped and scored from the 15 yard line! But no - reminiscent of the CAK game an inadvertent whistle blew the play dead? At least Loudon was awarded the football on the 15 yard line. Hawkins pounds forward for 10 yards, it’s 1st and goal from the five. Finally putting up a touchdown that was allowed to stay on the scoreboard, Hawkins vaulted to pay dirt! ‘Rock took over on the 31 yard line with 1:36 left in the third stanza. Nine plays later they were still on the move. On the next play, Moffitt coughs up the football. Alertly, #21 Cory Fritts scoops up the loose pigskin and is off to the races! 85 yards later he’s standing alone in the end zone! Touchdown Redskins, the score is now 28-7. Rockwood would score on this drive and with 4:05 left in the game, the Tigers attempted an on-sides kick. It didn’t go the required 10 yards and the Redskins took over on the 49 yard line. #7 Mark Harrison was the work horse on this drive, rushing four times for 28 yards. On 3rd and goal from the one yard line #4 Cody Fritts takes it in. The Redskins are in field goal formation, the snap was bad. QB/kicker Cody Fritts fired a pass out in the flat to #5 Senior defensive end/tight end Taylor Eldridge for the 2-point conversion. And with the final score of 36-14, the Redskins (9-1) ROCK the Tigers! In a hard fought game, the Tigers statistically out played your Redskins (1st downs, rushing, and passing). The deal breaker was the ‘Skins penchant for stifling defense that turned three turnovers into points (interception and a fumble returned for touchdowns and a fumbled punt that was converted into a field goal); the blotched on-sides kick attempt was also exchanged for six points. Congratulations to senior Rockwood running back #22 Billy Moffitt, who also eclipsed 1000 yards rushing during this game. The ‘Skins (9-1) will host the Happy Valley Warriors (5-5, 1-2A) this Friday, at “Chig Ratledge Stadium, Dukes Field Home of the Loudon Redskins in a first round playoff game.
