2002 Redskins News and Events

Hutchens Injury Update

(22 Sept. 2002)  Chris Hutchens e-mailed me the other day.  He says he will be back in three weeks.  New X-Rays show only a crack in the scapula as opposed to a clean break as was previously thought.

Hutchens Severely Injured in Sequoyah Game

(15 Sept. 2002)  Just when everything was going the Redskins' way, lady luck changed her tune.  Loudon Redskins running back and line backer Chris Hutchens (31) got popped and popped hard.  "He got blocked by a receiver coming from the outside cracking down in on him.  He didn't see him coming, and you kind of saw him at the last second, and he kind of turned his head and took the block on with his shoulder.  And by doing that, I think that's what caused the injury." said head coach Jeff Harig on the WLIL Saturday Morning High School Football Report the day after the game.  I spoke with Harig at the barber shop yesterday, and he said Hutchens is probably done for the season.  Tough break.

Loudon Beats Sequoyah

(13 Sept. 2002)  Loudon stomped the crud out of Sequoyah tonight beating them 43-7. Redemption for last week's lost to Anderson County and a primer for defending state champs, the Austin East Roadrunners next week.

Loudon Loses to Anderson County

(7 Sept. 2002) Well, I guess the title pretty much tells the whole story, but you have to give Loudon credit because the team played hard against a tough Anderson County team and against public opinion which (according to whom you listened) said Loudon was going to get beat by five touchdowns.  If you listen to the grapevine, this is supposed to be a down year for the Redskins; but I'm starting to disagree.  We might not win every game, but Big Red is certainly going to do better than was expected.  Anyway, the score was 23-14 for AC.

Update and Correction: Rushing Not out for Season

(7 Sept. 2002)  It was stated in an earlier news story that Redskins wide receiver and defensive back Kelly Rushing (6) was going to be out for the season due to a torn ACL.  I spoke with Kelly on the phone at the barber shop on Friday (9-6); and, apparently, this is not the case.  Rushing indicated the problem is with his ankle.  When asked when he would return, he said his doctors have not given him a date and that he did not know.

1st Week Ratings for the Loudon Redskins

(2 Sept. 2002) The first week's rankings/standings for the Redskins are as follows:

  • The Redskins overall ranking is 120 out of 304 teams with a power rating of 61.51.  They are ranked 16 out of 59 in the AAA class.  These numbers were taken from Sonny Moore's Computer Power Ratings.
  • The Redskins are ranked 15 out of 59 with a 55.8 rating according to Prep Performance Ratings by Earl Nall.

Loudon Beats McMinn Central

(30 August 2002)  In a game filled with numerous penalties, two ejections, and two fights, the Loudon Redskins defeated the McMinn Central Bobcats at McMinn 39-23.  For a scoring summary, click here.

Rushing Out for the Season

(30 August 2002)  Loudon Redskin's Kelly Rushing (6) is out for the season.  Rushing was the recipient of a late block during the Loudon/McMinn Central game, a block which resulted in a torn ACL.  Rushing is a 5'9" 145lb. senior who plays both wide receiver and defensive back.

McQueen Replaces Lawson as Statistician

(30 August 2002)  Believe it or not, Bruce Lawson has stepped down as Redskins statistician.  After 27 years, Lawson finally called it quits yielding the position to "the voice of the hill" Jeff McQueen.  McQueen announces the home games for the Loudon Quarterback Club and is the "middle man" between the LQBC and loudonfootball.com.  Having spoken with Jeff at the Jamboree, he informed me that the job was a bit more difficult than he imagined, but that he would be ready to go by the Loudon vs. McMinn Central game.  Good luck Jeff.

Scrimmage Dates and Two-A-Days

(19 July 2002)  I spoke with Coach Harig at the barber shop today, and he gave me the upcoming scrimmage dates.  They are:

  • August 6 at Catholic
  • August 9 at home against both Rockwood and Meigs County
  • August 13 at home against Halls
  • August 16 at William Blount

All games begin at 6:00 p.m.

Also, two-a-days will begin on July 29.  Times are 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Some Coaching Changes for the Redskins

(26 May 2002) I spoke with Coach Newman on Saturday May 25, and he informed of the following coaching changes for the 2002 football season.  They are as follows:

  • As most of you know by now, Jeff Harig has accepted the head coaching position at LHS.  He was the defensive coordinator.
  • Coach Darrell Brown is new to Loudon this year.  He is from McMinn Central.  He will be the offensive lineman coach.
  • Scott Mackintosh is returning to the Redskins after a year's hiatus.  He will be coaching the wide receivers.
  • Mike Newman is also returning after a few months' retirement from coaching.  He will be a wide receivers coach with Coach Mackintosh.
  • Coaches Stewart, Roberts, and Lorenz will be coaching the same positions they did last year.

Harig Accepts as Loudon Head Coach

(15 May 2002)  Redskins defensive coordinator Jeff Harig today officially accepted the head coaching position at Loudon, recently vacated by Tim Daniels, at a noon press conference held at Loudon High School.  Harig, 31, has been a coach at Loudon since 1994 when he accompanied the then-new head coach Daniels from Ohio.  Harig is currently the physical education teacher at Loudon Elementary School.  Starting next school year, he will teach Physical Education and Wellness at the high school.
