Scott High rolled into Dukes Field sporting a 5-1 record, to tangle with the 1-5 Redskins. The Highlanders schedule is back-loaded, their final three games are Fulton, A-E, and AC; good luck Highlanders. The Big Red has already played the region's upper tier teams, competing hard, but coming up short on the score board. A very frustrated coaching staff and team spent the week searching for answers. The one loss for Scott was to Lenoir City in week no. 2. This would be the 15th meeting between these oppoents, Loudon leads the series 12-2, and has won seven straight before tonight.
The evening started with the Homecoming Parade. Each class spent the week working on their respective floats. Placement in the float competion was: 3rd place - Freshman, 2nd place - Seniors, and 1st place and best overall went to the Juniors. There was a powder-puff football game, tug-of-war, dress up days, and several other activities during the week. The LHS class of 1953 held their 50 year class renunion this weekend. They had a pizza meal before the game, were introduced at half time, and are going to a formal dinner at the Whitestone Lodge in Paint Rock on Saturday. The "All Loudon County Band" comprised of the LHS and Greenback bands enterained the crowd before, during, at half time, and after the game. Good job Mr. and Mrs. Holly. At half time the 2002 Homecoming Queen, Miss Amy Fritts, pinned the tiara on Miss Tammy Collins, your 2003 Homecoming Queen.
The LHS Captains were: #63 Lee Sarten, #52 Matt Brown, #31 Chris Hutchens, and #22 Cody Wiggins. Scott High won the toss and wanted the ball. Nine plays later the score was six to nothing, Highlanders. Not to be outdone, Loudon put together a ten play drive culminating in a #31 Chris Hutchens five yard dive. The Redskins kicked off to Scott. On their first play they fumbled the ball, #51 Clay Matlock alertly recovered it for the 'Skins. Back to pass, #4 Cody Fritts hooked up with #33 Jake Brantley for a 37 yard pitch and catch touchdown. In a see-saw type of game, each score was matched by the other team. The 'Skins scored with 30 seconds left in the first half, holding on to a precarious 28-25 lead.
The second half started with the Highlanders attempting an on-sides kick. Loudon controlled the ball, and with the short field it was off to the races for #33 Jake Brantley on a 34 yard touchdown scamper. Scott got on the board with a three yard touchdown by #12 Jordan Jeffers in the forth quarter. After another failed on-sides attempt, all the Big Red had to do was run out the final 1:30 on the clock. The final score was 35-32, Loudon Redskins.
Next week, the Redskins (2-5) travel to Kingston to tangle with the Yellow Jackets (3-4), game time is 7:30 pm.
