The drizzle started about the same time as the scrimmage, but that didn’t dampen the sprits of the Redskins faithful. The rain didn’t last very long however, as good crowd was on hand to witness the third scrimmage of the pre-2003 season. The Tornados brought a young team, made up predominately of sophomores.
The fireworks started immediately. The ‘Skins started on offense, on the first play, #1 Patric Johnson took it to the house from 70 yards out. Touchdown “Big Red”! Johnson finished the day with a team high 118 yards rushing on 8 carries. As a team, rushing accounted for 204 yards on 24 tries. An average of 8.5 yards per carry, not bad.
Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach Ronnie Roberts utilized a two quarterback system. With #4 Cody Fritts back from his concussion, he and #3 Brandon Dixon swapped offensive series. Since both of these young men are sophomores, it will pay off in the long run having two experienced quarterbacks. The passing game yielded a combined 3 of 12 for 102 yards and 1 TD and 2 INT's. #7 Chase Randolph hooked up with QB Fritts on a 70 yard pitch and catch TD. Randolph posted 90 yards on two receptions (3 TD’s in two games).
On defense, the “Big Red Wall” held the Tornados to 82 yards rushing in 34 attempts (2.4 yds. per carry)! Although they gave up a 33 yard TD, the Alcoa ground game was contained. Alcoa also punched in a TD from the one yard line. The game breaker was a long Fritts pass that was intercepted and returned 60 yards for a TD. The Tornados QB was 10 of 15 for 157 yards passing; our defensive backs got a workout.
