2004 Loudon vs. KingstonRedskins Fight to the Bitter End, Yellow Jackets Hold On 15-13Article by Jeff McQueen
It was Senior Night, as the Redskin fans paid tribute to the departing seniors. All of the fall sports were recognized. Members of the football team, ladies soccer team, dance team, R.O.T.C., golf team, cheerleading team, and marching band were honored in a pre-game ceremony. Senior Redskin football players are: #27 Keith Townson, #40 Kyle Makowski, #54 Kyle Tallent, #80 Joshua McQueen, #81 Adam Russell, #82 Andy Belcher, #86 Jesse Henry, and #11 Jordan Hardin (deceased). All of the seniors represented the team as Captains. Loudon won the toss, and wanted the ball. To start the game, #24 Josh Hawkins got a 24 yard kick off return, the Big Red started first and 10 with the ball on the 35 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Hawkins faked a sweep, and then aired it out long, intended for #21 Corry Fritts, incomplete. The ‘Skins earned a first down but ended up punting. #4 Cody Fritts was back in punt formation, disaster struck when the snap sailed over his head, losing -15 yards in the process. Kingston took over on the 21 yard line, and needed just three plays to score. #34 Chad Johnson bullied over from the five yard line. Loudon was off sides on the extra point attempt. With the ball now on the 1.5 yard line, the Jackets decided to go for two. Johnson got the call and the points. #8 Tyler Campbell fielded the ensuing kick off and turned up field. With a 37 yard return, the Redskins were in business on the 43 yard line. However, the Loudon offense was three and out. After the punt by Fritts, Kingston was pinned down on the 27 yard line. With a heavy dose of Chad Johnson, the Jackets moved down the field. 10 plays later, Johnson was again in the end zone. QB Rock Gurney kicked the extra point. Johnson’s touchdown was the first play of the second period. On the next series, Kingston was guilty of two personal foul penalties to the tune of -30 yards. This opportunity was unfulfilled though as once again the Redskins were forced to punt. Loudon stalled out at the 32 yard line and pooch kicked down to the 16 yard line. Kingston took to the air, completing two out of four passes for 40 yards. #21 Corry Fritts provided a pass break up to force down and distance trouble for the Jackets. Back to the work horse Johnson, on the next play, the ball squirts loose. Out of the pack with the football comes #80 Josh McQueen, he is streaking toward the goal line, but the officials blew the play dead. The Redskins capitalized on this turnover, turning it into much needed points. Seven plays and 5:17 later the ‘Skins cracked the goal line. Hawkins ran for 38 yards, and then added six yards + a 15 yard facemask penalty. #3 Brandon Dixon rushed for five yards. The touchdown came on four yard plunge by Hawkins. Cody Fritts kicked a 25 yard extra point. Kingston returned the kick off 32 yards; the ball is resting on the 41 yard line. On the second play, QB Rock Gurney is in the shotgun formation. The snap sailed over his head for a -27 yard loss; the fumble was recovered by #81 Adam Russell! Taking over on the 21 yard line, the clock shows 1:47 left before the half. After seven yards by Hawkins; Fritts completes a pass to #3 Brandon Dixon. Dixon is fighting for extra yards, the football is stripped. Kingston took over on the nine yard and ran the clock out. At the half, the score is 15 to 7, Yellow Jackets. To start the second half, Kingston returned the football 30 yards to the 45 yard line. Johnson gained nine yards on two carries. Kingston had the ball fourth down and one on the Redskin 46 yard line. A big stop was needed in order to shift the momentum of the game. Everyone in the stadium knew what the play would be… Johnson up the middle. Nose man, #53 Jimmy McQueen stuffed the play for -1 yard, forcing a Jacket punt. Loudon and Kingston swapped punts. Three times (punted) for Kingston and Loudon twice. The Redskins started a drive that spanned the third and fourth quarters. On fourth and five, Loudon was in punt formation. The ball was centered to the up back Hawkins, he rambled for 20 yards and a first down. This drive consumed over six minutes and required 11 plays, which resulted in a five yard touchdown by Hawkins. With the score now 15 to 13, the Redskins tried for two. The Kingston defense had other ideas, as they stuffed the attempt. That would be all the scoring. Defensively, the Redskins made adjustments during half time, which limited #34 Chad Johnson’s effectiveness (1st half: 105 yds, 2nd half: 46 yds). Seniors #54 Kyle Tallent, #80 Josh McQueen, #81 Adam Russell, #86 Jesse Henry fought valiantly, as did the whole team. Tallent played well on both sides of the ball. McQueen recovered a fumble and logged ten stops, Russell caught a 19 yard pass and also recovered a fumble, and Henry blocked a pass and caught an 11 yard pass as well. The final score was 15-13, Kingston Yellow Jackets.
