2004 Redskins Four-Way ScrimmageBig Red vs. Cleveland, Polk Co., and OoltewahArticle and stats by Jeff McQueen, On Saturday, August 7th, the Loudon Redskins traveled down to the home of the Cleveland Blue Raiders to participate in a 4-way scrimmage. Represented was the host Cleveland Blue Raiders (4A), Ooltewah Owls (5A), and the (2A) Polk Co. Wildcats. A fine morning for football was on hand, a little cool with early morning fog; however that was soon forgotten when things got down to business. Your Redskins drew Polk Co. first and started on offense. The stats are as follows:
Polk Co. was much improved from last year. Next up were the Cleveland Blue Raiders. Cleveland is a young team, made up mostly of sophomores. The Blue Raiders were pretty fired-up, and seemed to intimidate the Big Red, however the Cleveland offense was held in check.
The Ooltewah Owls posed the biggest challenge of the day; they run the same offense as Mt. Juliet who we faced in a passing scrimmage (shot gun + 3, 4, or 5 wide).
On the last play of the period, #24 Josh Hawkins hauled in a Fritts pass and was churning up the real estate headed for a sure touchdown. #80 Josh McQueen was trailing the play and made some inadvertent contact, out came the flags for a clipping penalty. The coaching staff was pretty fired up at that call. Period four pitted your Loudon Redskins against the Polk Co. Wildcats in goal line drills. The Skins failed to score on 4 tries from the 10 yd line; Polk Co. was stopped on an interception by senior safety #80 Josh McQueen. With time left in the period, the #2s swapped a couple of O and D series. #32 Grant Gasper (freshman) rushed for 17 yards and blocked a punt, #42 Tyler Campbell (freshman) had 2 carries for 31 tds and a TD, and newcomer #20 Tom Cruz posted 31 yds and scored a touchdown on 2 carries. Summary: The Redskins at times looked good on both sides of the ball. The O and D lines will need more consistency. #4 Cody Fritts looked more at ease in the pocket, #24 Josh Hawkins caught the ball well, freshman #42 Tyler Campbell was a big surprise rushing for 76 yds against the varsity. The defense line was headed by #53 Jimmy McQueen with 3 stops for no gain, #34 Charlie Hampton had an INT and a tipped pass from the linebacker position, #81 Adam Russell and #52 Kyle Tallent fought off double teams all day, and #80 Josh McQueen was head hunting and added an INT from the safety position. The Redskins will go to Meigs Co. this Friday (8-13) for a 3-way scrimmage game: Meigs, Loudon, and Midway. The Photos...
